The 309 Road
New Zealand’s famous 309 Road
is a scenic 20-kilometre journey which crosses the backbone of the Coromandel Peninsula from east to west. Mostly unsealed, it showcases spectacular scenery as it winds through lush farmland, pine forests and extensive areas of beautiful native bush. A leisurely drive along The 309 Road as part of your trip through the Coromandel region will give you a feel for the real New Zealand countryside and inspire you through its undeniable beauty. There are a number of stops you can make along the route if you wish to turn this short road trip into a full-day experience.
Allow yourselves between 2 and 3 hours here if you wish to experience everything The Waterworks has to offer.
Just past The Waterworks is the road that leads up to Castle Rock; a popular lookout point. Drive up the forest road about 2 kms, and then walk approximately one hour to the top. It is a bit of a scramble for the last few metres, but is well within the scope of any normally fit adult or child. Wear appropriate footwear. Before undertaking the 2.5 hour return walk, it is suggested that you obtain up-to-date track information from The Waterworks or through Coromandel i-SITE on (07) 866 8598.
Located in the Waiau Falls Scenic Reserve the Waiau Falls crashes over a rock wall to a pool below.
A spectacular grove of large Kauri trees; including the "Siamese Kauris". Kauri trees are famous in New Zealand because of the size they grow to.
